A 2-year-old girl is in a Chicago hospital after suffering a gunshot wound Tuesday night inside a Gary home.
Gary police responded at 6:51 p.m. to a call from the 1700 block of Polk Street. According to the police, the caller said an infant had been shot. The infant was found in critical condition with the gunshot wound, according to Gary Cmdr. Jack Hamady.
An adult female and adult male were inside the residence at the time, said police, and they were taken to the Gary Public Safety Building to be interviewed.
The child was transported to Methodist Hospitals Northlake Campus in Gary before she was flown to Comer Children's Hospital in Chicago for treatment according to police.
Hamady said the scene has been secured and the Lake County/Gary Metro Homicide Unit, the Gary Violent Crime Unit and Lake County Crime Lab are investigating the incident. Hamady said members of the agency were interviewing people and canvassing the area as of 8 p.m. Tuesday.
