The Federal Government has declared Wednesday, May 1, 2019 as public holiday to celebrate the 2019 Workers’ Day. The Minister of Interior, Abdulrahman Dambazau, made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government in a statement signed by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary Barr. Georgina Ekeoma Ehuriah yesterday. He congratulated Nigerian workers on their commitment and sacrifice towards building a greater Nigeria. Dambazau also commended workers’ effort at ensuring the full implementation of the policies and programmes of the government through effective service delivery to Nigerians and foreigners at large.

A raid on a night club in Abuja has brought about the  arrest of about 70 fun seekers by the police. According to tweets shared by a Nigerian lawyer @martobono, some of the arrested women were molested. Among those arrested is a mother who was allegedly prevented from nursing her 2 months old baby. A little boy’s attempt to save a chicken he accidentally ran over has struck a chord with thousands on social media. A post - complete with a picture of the six-year-old - detailing his efforts has won a ton of love on Facebook and gone crazy viral. The little boy has also been praised by his school for his actions. The viral post was shared by Facebook user Sanga Says on April 2. “This young boy from Sairang, Mizoram, accidentally ran over his neighbour’s chicken. He took the chicken, ran to a nearby hospital and with all the money he had, asked for help,” says the post. According to media reports, after running over the chicken, Lalchhanhima first returned home and begged his parents to take it to the hospital. However, his father told him to go himself. He eventually returned home upset because no one helped him at the hospital. Lagos State Government has alerted residents of the state to the circulation of “poisonous ponmo" in some markets in the state. A statement by Adeola Salako, Director of Public Affairs, Lagos State Ministry of Health, noted that the government has so far arrested three person involved in the selling of the “poisonous ponmo”. Ponmo, as it is popularly known in Nigeria, is cow skin, specially prepared for consumption. He revealed that the suspects were arrested at Ojo and Iba Local Government Areas of the state with large quantities of ponmo and that the seized ponmo have been sent to the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control in order for tests to be carried out to check if they are okay for consumption. A male fashion model has died after collapsing on the runway at Brazil's Sao Paulo Fashion Week. Twenty-six year-old Tales Soares, known artistically as Tales Cotta, was walking the runway Saturday when he suddenly stumbled and fell as he was about to exit. His catwalk fall was captured on a video from the event. Soares received help after falling and was taken to a hospital where he later died, fashion week organizers said in a statement posted to Twitter. Organizers added, "We are sorry for this loss and give our sincere apologies to Tales' family." Soares' cause of death is not yet known. His management company, Base Management, remembered Soares as having "exemplary behavior." In an Instagram post, Base said that the model never had, or complained about health problems and was a vegetarian who had a healthy diet. Shuaibu Ibrahim of the Nigerian Army University is the new Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). John Singleton is in a coma following a major stroke. Singleton, who is 51, fell ill after a trip to Costa Rica last week, and then suffered a stroke while under medical care, with initial reports suggesting that it was mild. However, according to legal documents seen by US site The Blast, Singleton’s mother Sheila Ward has now applied to be his conservator. In the documents, Singleton’s stroke is described as ‘ a major impairment to motor skills and psychological functions, including his ability to reason logically’. A leader of the Chinese community in northern Nigeria has been crowned, or "turbaned", as a chief by the Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi. At  the traditional ceremony in Kano, Mike Zhang took the title of Wakilin Yan China, meaning the 'leader of the Chinese residents', as his head was wrapped in a turban. Mr Zhang will be a vital link between the Chinese community and the locals.

Canadian actress and model Stefanie Sherk died on April 20 of an apparent suicide by drowning. She was 43. The Los Angeles Medical Examiner-Coroner confirmed the ruling and cause of death. A jilted lover, Deji Adenuga, popularly known as Dakar, has allegedly killed five members of a family of eight on Adetuwo Street, Igbodigo town in Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State over the decision of his girlfriend, simply identified as Titi, end their relationship. Porter, 47, passed away in November after contracting double pneumonia while battling the flu. Social media influencer Rossi Lorathio Adams has been arrested after allegedly entering someone's home equipped with a gun and taser in an attempt to steal a website domain. The 26-year-old could be facing up to 20 years behind bars as a result of his actions. According to court documents, “At one time, Adams had over a million followers on his social media sites, which mostly contained images and videos of young adults engaged in crude behavior, drunkenness and nudity." Adams is currently in police custody and faces a maximum 20 years in prison, a $250,000 fine and three years of supervised release.

At least 207 people have died after suspected suicide bombers blew up churches and five-star hotels in an Easter Sunday terror attack in Sri Lanka. The eight blasts today ripped through landmarks around Colombo and on Sri Lanka's east coast, targeting Christians, hotel guests and foreign tourists and leaving at least 450 people wounded. Six bombs went off in quick succession before another two blasts two hours later in Sri Lanka's worst violence since the end of its decades-long civil war in 2009. The victims include at least 35 foreigners, believed to include Britons and Americans as well as nationals of Turkey, China, Portugal and the Netherlands. Custom officers at Hong Kong International Airport recovered more than half of a kilogram of cocaine from an African traveller who had allegedly hidden the drug in her body. The 37-year old Nigerian arrived in the city on a flight from Lagos via Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Customs officers intercepted the suspect, who claimed to be a businesswoman and was said to be acting suspiciously, shortly after her arrival on Thursday. She was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Yau Ma Tei for a check-up and confirmed to have foreign objects in her body. Officers first recovered 215 grams of cocaine contained in condoms and plastic bags found in her vagina. She later discharged 24 capsules of cocaine, each weighing 14 grams, from her body. The haul, weighing 550 grams in total, was estimated to be worth HK$522,000 (US$66,900). The authorities said the woman, who was detained for inquiries, may discharge more drugs.

Adele has separated from her husband Simon Konecki, representatives for the singer have confirmed. In a statement on Friday, they said the pair were "committed to raising their son together lovingly". Adele gave birth to her son, Angelo, in 2012. She married Konecki - an investment banker turned charity boss - in 2016 after five years of dating. The best-selling London-born artist is known for her chart-topping albums 19, 21 and 25. The statement added that the pair were asking for privacy and there would be no further comment. They married in secret and Adele first addressed the wedding publicly during an acceptance speech at the 2017 Grammys, where she thanked her "husband". Blackberry has announced that its messaging platform will be shut down on May 31, because “users have moved on to other platforms, while new users proved difficult to sign on”. President Muhammadu Buhari has signed the bill approving N30,000 as the new national minimum wage into law. The billed was passed by both chambers of the National Assembly before the general election, the House of Representatives in January and the Senate in March. However, presidential assent was still outstanding, prompting the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) to give Buhari until May 1 to complete the signing.

A man has warned Nigerians to stop going to hospitals in India for treatment and he shared his mother’s tragic story as a warning to others. Tobi Marshal said his mum died “as a result of medical negligence and malpractice from a hospital in India”. Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) and the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) have accused the International Monetary Fund (IMF) of giving the Nigerian government "poisonous" advice on removal of fuel subsidy. They also said the current petroleum scarcity-scare is the country is as a result of the IMF advice. Christine Lagarde, the Managing Director of IMF, had advised the Nigerian government to remove fuel subsidy. She stated this during the joint annual spring meetings with the World Bank in Washington DC, on Thursday. However, a joint statement issued by NUPENG and PENGASSAN on Sunday, read: “The statement of IMF has created panic in the country with associated hoarding of petroleum products, panic buying, skyrocketed increases in prices of goods and services in the country."
