First Indigenous Abuja Priest Shot By Robbers In Gwagwalada While Shopping.

Gunmen, suspected to be armed robbers, have killed Rev Fr Micheal Akawu, who was the first and only indigenous Abuja catholic priest.

According to media reports, the deceased, who only became a priest in February, 2017, was shot dead, yesterday, while shopping at a supermarket in Gwagwalada, Abuja. The gunmen were said to be there to rob.

Friends and loved ones have been penning down tributes to the First Indigenous Abuja Catholic Priest on social media.

Emmanuel Onwubiko wrote;

MICHAEL AKAWU was the first Abuja indigene to be ordained a priest for the Abuja Catholic Archdiocese(according to information from a reliable source))He was ordained last year as I learnt…He was killed by armed robbers in Gwagwalada Abuja Yesterday at a supermarket where he was buying items for the use of the Church…Rest in Peace… May those who slaughtered you because of material things be punished for this dastardly crime against humanity… Nigeria has failed as a nation state and has gone to the dogs and baboons.”

The Catholic Church spokesman, Fr. Chris Anyanwu, confirmed the incident but added that he did not have much details about the circumstances surrounding Akawu’s demise.

“I heard about the incident, but I don’t have much details about it because I’m not in Abuja. It’s very unfortunate, but I will get the details once I return,” he said.

The FCT Police Public Relations Officer, Anjuguri Manzah, could not be reached for comment as he did not respond to phone calls.
