Liberia’s president George Weah has declared the University of Liberia and all public universities tuition-free for undergraduate students in the country.
He made the announcement before hundreds of cheering students on Wednesday at the University of Liberia’s Capitol Hill Campus in Monrovia during a planned visit to the school, and on his Facebook page thereafter, he wrote:
"Today, I’m excited to announce that I have declared the University of Liberia and all other Public Universities in Liberia tuition free for all undergraduates".
Details of the new tuition-free policy and source of funding have not been disclosed by the Liberian government. If implemented, it will be the first of such policies in sub-Saharan Africa. The other public universities in the country are Booker Washington Institute, Louis Arthur Grimes School of Law and the William V.S. Tubman University.
