Baby boy dies after falling into bucket of scalding-hot water and suffering 80% burns as his mother prepared a bath for him in Ukraine.
A baby boy has died after falling into a bucket of scalding water as his mum prepared a bath.
Medics were unable to save Daniil Chernenko after he suffered burns to 80% of his body.
His heart stopped beating after 11 days in a critical condition in Salhany, Ukraine.
His devastated mum Tetyana Chernenko stayed by his bedside until he died and now has not been able to forgive herself for what happened, reports say.
Tetyana had reportedly brought a bucket with boiling water into the bedroom and put it on the floor near a table as she prepared to bath Daniil.
She planned to mix some boiling water with cold water in a baby bathtub which was standing on the table.
But when she turned her back for a few seconds, the toddler fell from the table into the water.
"I saw how he fell in the boiling water. I rushed to the bucket and pulled him out.
"I hugged him, then wrapped him in a cotton cloth. When I unwrapped him I saw his skin was peeling off," Tetyana said.
Distressing photos taken by Katherine Nozhevnikova, a volunteer from a charity in Salhany, show Daniil lying on the bed after being hospitalised.
It had been reported only patches of skin on the youngster's forehead, fingers and toes escaped being affected.
But doctors said the child became hoarse from the constant crying caused by his unbearable pain.
Mrs Nozhevnikova said: "Ten litres of boiling water and just a few seconds during which the mother's attention was diverted.
"The child won 11 days of life thanks to people who donated funds for his treatment. We have lost him. I am so sorry."
Police are treating the case as an accident.
