The tallest statue in the world, honoring India's first deputy prime minister and twice as tall as the Statue of Liberty, was unveiled Wednesday. The 597-foot steel and bronze "Statue of Unity," erected in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's home state of Gujarat, depicts Vallabhbhai Patel, who played a part in unifying the country and leading it to independence. The bronze-clad statue cost $430 million to build and houses a memorial garden and a museum at its base. Modi ordered the statue built when he was Gujarat chief minister. It took 33 months to build. Wednesday was Patel's birthday, known as National Unity Day. "Brothers and Sisters, this highest statue of the world will be remembered for the whole world, our future generations, the courage, strength and determination of that person," Modi said at the ceremony. The statue, dubbed the “Statue of Unity,” is 182 meters tall, making it the tallest statue in the world.

The Ondo State Government says it has awarded 318 projects worth over N28 billion in Ondo Central Senatorial District of the state between January and September 2018. Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of Ondo state disclosed this on Tuesday at a town hall meeting organised by the state Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget. The Ondo senatorial district comprises six local government area: Akure South, Akure North, Ifedore, Idanre, Ondo East and Ondo West. Mr Akeredolu, who was represented by Wale Akinterinwa, the state Commissioner for Finance, said the projects spanned the six council areas. He said over N2 billion was earmarked for renovation and construction projects in 175 schools and would be executed through the state Universal Basic Education Board. According to the governor, the least projects in the district would gulp N5 million and were being executed by state Agric-Business Empowerment Agency. Former Ekiti State Governor, Chief Ayodele Fayose left Ikoyi Prison yesterday at around 4.30pm after his bail papers have been signed by Justice Mojisola Olatoregun. The Federal High Court, Ikoyi, Lagos on Wednesday last week granted him bail but the bail conditions were met the next day promptly. In a press statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Idowu Adelusi, Fayose thanked the people of Nigeria for their solidarity support assuring that he would not let the people down. He stated that his present travails is the price he has to pay as a leader, but added that he remained unshakable and with God on his side, he would triumph. The former governor said he was fully ready to face the trial and would not absent himself from court sitting.

The novelist, poet, performer and playwright Ntozake Shange, best known for her 1976 Obie-winning choreopoem for colored girls who have considered suicide when the rainbow is enuf, died last Saturday at the age of 70. Shange had suffered from a series of strokes and was battling a severe neurological disorder, but no cause of death was announced. Shange was born Paulette L. Williams in Trenton, New Jersey in 1948. Thanks to her family’s volunteering in the arts she was surrounded by celebrities, including Miles Davis, Chuck Berry, and W.E.B. Du Bois. Shange began to write poetry and plays while in college and she was best known for her play For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide/When The Rainbow is Enuf. The play made its Broadway debut at the Booth Theater in 1976. It has since been adapted into a book and a 2010 Tyler Perry movie. A former  Nigerian Works Minister, Tony Anenih, is dead. His death was confirmed by multiple sources including his son who said the family would release a statement later tonight. Mr Anenih, 85, died on Sunday evening at Cedarcrest Hospital, Abuja, where he was receiving treatment for an undisclosed ailment, a family source said.

Five Catholic nuns have been abducted by gunmen in Delta state. The nuns belong to the Order of the Missionary of Martha and Mary in Agbor. According to media reports, the victims were said to be returning from a burial ceremony in the eastern part of the country when the hoodlums struck around the Railway Line near Agbor. The vehicle conveying the nuns was reportedly shot at, with two of them getting hit on the legs by the bullets. The incident was said to have taken place on Thursday. A priest in the diocese was quoted as saying: “Please, pray for the release of five MMM Sisters kidnapped at Agbor, and two other MMM Sisters in the same vehicle shot at the leg region. “The sisters were on their way from the east where they went for a funeral.” Muhammad Mustafa, the state commissioner of police, confirmed the incident, saying the victims were in a private vehicle when they were abducted.

The police in Lagos State, have arrested an 18-year-old barber, Bakare Ismail, for allegedly defiling his neighbour, a 14-year-old girl. Ismail had reportedly lured the girl, Bidemi (pseudonym), to his parents’ residence on Banjo Street, Owutu in the Ikorodu area of the state on Saturday, October 13, around 4pm. While the victim was seated, Ismail allegedly offered her a soft drink laced with a sedative. She was said to have slept off minutes after taking the drink. According to media reports, the suspect had sex with Bidemi, who reportedly woke up to find bloodstains on her undies. The incident was reported at the Gender Section of the Lagos State Police Command headquarters in Ikeja. A man in Florida with a lengthy criminal record was arrested and charged Friday with sending 13 packages containing improvised explosive devices to high-profile figures across the country, authorities said. The arrest came on the same day law enforcement found three more devices — in Florida, New York and California — and capped off an increasingly tense five-day stretch in which at least one explosive device was found each day, putting officials and potential targets on high alert. None of the devices detonated. All of them were sent to people who have criticized or clashed with President Trump, and authorities continued to warn Friday that others could still be out there. A knife-wielding assailant injured 14 children at a kindergarten in the western Chinese city of Chongqing on Friday, police reported. The attacker, a 39-year-old woman, was taken in custody and no motive for the assault was given. Police said the attack at the Xinshiji Kindergarten in the city’s outskirts took place at 9.30 am as the children were returning to classes. It said all were receiving treatment in a hospital. No other information about the attacker was given, other than her surname, Liu. Footage posted on social media showed injured children walking to ambulances from the school gate, with some being placed on gurneys. China has suffered a number of such incidents in recent years, blamed largely on the mentally ill or people bearing grudges. Ethiopian members of parliament have elected Sahle-Work Zewde as the country's first female president. Ms Sahle-Work is an experienced diplomat who has now become Africa's only female head of state. Her election to the ceremonial position comes a week after Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed appointed a cabinet with half the posts taken up by women. After being sworn in, President Sahle-Work promised to work hard to make gender equality a reality in Ethiopia. Tragedy struck on Wednesday in the agrarian community of Ifira Akoko, in the Akoko South-East Local Government Area of Ondo State, as thunderbolt killed a man identified as Ramoni Aluko. The 43-year-old man, who was said to be a timber contractor, was hit by the thunderbolt while cutting an Iroko tree. According to a source, Aluko and one of his business partners, Gbenga Oniyere, went to a forest in Ifiira Akoko to cut the Iroko tree but the thunderbolt hit and killed him. The source said villagers were giving the incident a spiritual interpretation. He added that shortly after the incident, some Sango (god of thunder) worshipers arrived at the scene to perform rites before the burial of the victim. Liberia’s president George Weah has declared the University of Liberia and all public universities tuition-free for undergraduate students in the country. He made the announcement before hundreds of cheering students on Wednesday at the University of Liberia’s Capitol Hill Campus in Monrovia during a planned visit to the school, and on his Facebook page thereafter, he wrote: "Today, I’m excited to announce that I have declared the University of Liberia and all other Public Universities in Liberia tuition free for all undergraduates". Details of the new tuition-free policy and source of funding have not been disclosed by the Liberian government. If implemented, it will be the first of such policies in sub-Saharan Africa. Suspicious packages containing explosive devices were sent to the homes of former Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton this week. The U.S. Secret Service intercepted a suspicious package mailed to the residence of Barack Obama on Tuesday. A day later, an explosive device was found in the mailbox outside the Chappaqua, New York home of former President Bill and Hillary Clinton, the former U.S. secretary and 2016 presidential candidate. Bomb technicians found explosive powder and a device similar to a pipe bomb inside the package found outside the Clinton’s home. The package was detonated as a precaution. Also on Tuesday, a bomb was placed in the mailbox outside the home of billionaire globalist and socialist George Soros’s home. Jon James McMurray (34) had been walking on the wing of a Cessna plane during the stunt when he fell. His manager, Ryan Desrochers, said the rapper had trained “intensively” for the stunt. During filming as he moved farther out on to a wing, the small Cessna went into a downward spiral. McMurray held on to the wing too long and by the time he let go he didn’t have time to open his parachute. He died on impact. The plane landed safely. A friend of the rapper told The Vancouver Star: “He planned for everything. It should have been straightforward. It’s one of those things. We’re not really sure what happened.” Police are investigating the incident.

Six children are dead and another 12 sickened in an adenovirus outbreak at a rehabilitation center in New Jersey, health officials said Tuesday. It's unclear how long ago the children were sickened, and when the six children died at the Haskell, New Jersey, facility. State officials confirmed a total of 18 cases of adenovirus among paediatric patients at the Wanaque Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation on Tuesday. Adenoviruses typically cause "mild illness" but the children affected are "medically fragile", officials say. The state investigation is ongoing. The centre is now closed to new patients. The children involved have "severely compromised immune systems" rendering them more susceptible to the virus, the health department said. "The combination of a worse strain of adenovirus together with a fragile population has led to a more severe outbreak," it added. The health facility in Haskell is privately owned.
