Wendy Williams will be taking a break from TV, on doctor’s orders.
The daytime-talk-show host is going on a brief hiatus to deal with health issues relating to her hyperthyroidism and Graves’ disease, an immune system disorder that can squeeze the muscles behind the eyeballs.
“My thyroid has been totally cattywampus. That is the eye thing that you all have been seeing,” the 53-year-old told her “Wendy Williams Show” studio audience Wednesday. “You caught it before I did.”
On Tuesday, her endocrinologist prescribed three weeks of vacation to manage the issues and transition to new medication, she said. But in true Williams fashion, she speculated that she would “be back in two.” Reruns will air in the meantime.
The spirited host broke the news during a segment of her program where she explained that her symptoms have included irritability, trouble sleeping, rapid heartbeat and heat intolerance.
“I feel like there are birds swimming around my head,” she said. “You know like a cartoon. Like constantly high, but not high.”
She added that she’s going through menopause and recently lost 50 pounds, bringing her weight down to 146. She also said she’s busy trying to give her son a normal senior year of high school and help him transition to college.
“What I want to say to women more than men is stop putting everyone first. Because if we’re not good, they’re not good,” she said, encouraging women to get medical checkups twice a year.
Williams has never missed a day of work, a spokesperson for the show told The Times, but “her health and well-being must be put before all else.”
“Wendy has been openly dealing with her Graves’ disease for many years in addition to hyperthyroidism,” the spokesperson said, noting that three weeks off are necessary for her to “rest to get her levels and medication in sync.”
In October, the host collapsed during her live show after she overheated in her Halloween costume.
