The “American Idol” winner’s 18-year-old nephew, Tyquan Von Ricco Washington, was shot and killed in North Carolina on Tuesday, according to the Greensboro Police Department.
Greensboro Police say the teen was shot during a dispute with 21-year-old David Lee White Jr. White was arrested and charged with first degree murder, police said. He is being held at the Guilford County Jail without bond.
Barrino’s nephew suffered multiple gunshot wounds, and although EMS performed “emergency life-saving measures,” he was later pronounced dead at Moses Cone Hospital.
Barrino, who won the third season of “Idol,” posted a tribute to her late nephew.
“Ty 😢 Auntie is So Sorry Baby 💔 RIP to my Oldest Nephew Please Pray for his Mother and my Brother @riccobarrino & his Stepdad,” she captioned photos of Washington.
Washington’s father also posted a loving tribute to his son on Instagram.
“I wanted you to know that from the depths of my heart your daddy loves you and he always has,” he wrote. “… As I write this letter with tears streaming down my face I want you to know that I showed you tough love because I knew you were something special.”
“Well on this day you became a bigger man when you put on a pair of wings and did what I have yet to do,” he ended the letter. “So you show me your leadership skills. You go join hands with your grandma and kiss for me. You sing loud for me up there."
