Janelle Monae is worried that she won’t have children because she’s so focused on her career in the entertainment industry.
The PYNK singer, who starred in the Oscar-winning movie Moonlight, revealed that she is ‘scared’ that she won’t start a family ‘within the time frame’ that she wants to because she didn’t ‘plan accordingly.’
Speaking to Fault magazine, the 32-year-old who is prepping the release of her album Dirty Computer said: ‘What scares me is that I won’t have a family within the time frame that I want to have a family.
‘I want to have children, but I don’t want to miss that time because I was so focused on my career and because I didn’t plan accordingly. That scares me most now more than anything.’
And the Hidden Figures actor also admits that she has been ‘inspired’ to be completely honest by some of the recent projects she has worked on. ‘I was inspired by many movies, some of which I’ve been a part of and it all resonated with me,’ she said. The singer and actress added: ‘I have soul searched, and this time around, I think being honest is most important. It’s about being able to say, “hey I’m ok if people don’t like that I’m embracing this side of me”, it’s the side that my friends and family get to see and they still love me the same.’
Elsewhere in the interview, Monae confessed that being a “self-editor” and “perfectionist” has held her back.
“I don’t enjoy my experiences when I’m so focused on being consistently perfect in every situation,” she said. “It’s something that I’ve had to work on my entire life actively. It used to consume my experience, and I couldn’t enjoy things because I was so focused on how they were going to be presented.”
Today, she’s learning to enjoy her imperfections, adding, “I realized that I connect more with myself and with other people when my faults are being shared for all to see.”
