Academic activities have been paralysed at the Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, (RUGIPO) in Ondo state, following the killing of one of the school’s lecturers, Mr. Taiwo Akinyemi, by some suspected kidnappers.
The murder of the lecturer led to the suspension of the second semester examination scheduled to begin on Monday, while students, lecturers and other staff of the institution moved round the campus in possession as a mark of respect for the deceased.
The deceased was kidnapped near Amurin village along Akure/Owo road last week Tuesday after close of work with four other people who had earlier regained their freedom but he was killed by his abductors over alleged failure of his family to pay ransom to secure his release.
Radio Nigeria gathered that the lifeless body of the 52 year-old father of three was said to have been found in a bush tied to a stick on Sunday evening.
Addressing journalists over the death of Mr. Akinyemi, the Chairman of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Polytechnic, (SSANIP), RUGIPO chapter, Mr. Chris Olowolade, explained that the union had entered into negotiation with the kidnappers for the payment of the ransom when he was killed.
Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer, (PPRO), Mr. Femi Joseph, said no arrest had been made but men of the State Police Command had been on the trail of the kidnappers.
