Four British schoolgirls and their teacher have allegedly been sexually assaulted by a gunman in Ghana.

The girls, aged 16 and 17, were attacked by a man with a rifle at the walled compound where they were staying, it is claimed.

A security guard is reported to have been shot and left seriously injured when he stepped in to try and stop the assaults on Saturday night.

All five of the victims, who cannot be named, are thought to have been flown home to Britain where they are recovering from the ordeal.

The teens were part of a group on a volunteering trip, The Sun reported, and staying near the capital Accra.

Local police are understood to be investigating the incident and the UK Foreign Office providing support to the victims.
