Tower Records founder Russ Solomon, who revolutionized retail music in Northern California and beyond, has died.
He was 92.
The Sacramento native apparently died of a heart attack while watching the Academy Awards telecast on Sunday, his son, Michael Solomon said.
“Ironically, he was giving his opinion of what someone was wearing that he thought was ugly, then asked (his wife) Patti to to refill his whisky,” Solomon was quoted as saying in the Bee.
He was dead when she returned.
“We lost a Sacramento and national icon,” Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg tweeted. “Russ Solomon’s contributions to our community will last another 92 years and more. We mourn his loss and our thoughts are with his wife Patti and their family.
Russ Solomon founded Tower Records in 1960, turning it into a $1-billion-a-year business before digital downloading led to its downfall. The company went out of action in December 2006 after filing for bankruptcy twice.
