An American man has died after drowning during an underwater proposal to his girlfriend while on holiday in Tanzania.
Steven Weber, from Louisiana, planned his proposal to girlfriend Kenesha Antoine around the couple's unique accommodation. They were staying in a wooden cabin that was partially submerged on the lower level, allowing residents to look out under the sea. On Thursday 19 September, Steven swam underwater, up to the glass window in the cabin, where he held up a piece of paper for Kenesha who was watching from inside.
Tragically, the note read: "I can't hold my breath long enough to tell you everything I love about you. But… Everything I love about you, I love more every day!"
Footage of the proposal - recorded by Kenesha and later posted on Facebook - shows Steven turning over the piece of paper to reveal the all-important question.
"Will you please be my wife? Marry me???" read the note.
Steven then put a ring box to the window and revealed an engagement ring to his partner.
But heartbreakingly, that was the last Kenesha saw of her future husband, as Steven Weber drowned on his way back up to the surface.
"There are no words adequate enough to [honour] the beautiful soul that is Steven Weber, Jr," wrote Kenesha in a Facebook post following her partner's death.
"You were a bright light to everyone you encountered. You never met a stranger, and you brought so much joy to so many people. You were kind, compassionate, you regularly made me cry with laughter, and you showered me with a love like none I’d ever experienced."
Referencing the tragic proposal, Kenesha continued: "You never emerged from those depths, so you never got to hear my answer, 'Yes! Yes! A million times, yes, I will marry you!!' We never got to embrace and celebrate the beginning of the rest of our lives together, as the best day of our lives turned into the worst, in the cruelest twist of fate imaginable.
"I will try to take solace in the fact that we enjoyed the most amazing bucket list experiences these past few days, and that we both were so happy and absolutely giddy with excitement in our final moments together," she wrote.
"Rest well, my sweet baby! Always know that you are forever loved!" Kenesha signed off her post, which has resounded with thousands as it spread far and wide on the social media site.
The Manta Resort, where the couple was staying when the tragedy occurred, released a statement in regards to Steven's death. "Our sincerest condolences, thoughts and prayers are with his girlfriend, families and friends impacted by this tragic accident," the resort's CEO, Matthew Saus, said.
