In case you didn't know, R. Kelly began life thinking he wanted to play basketball professionally. While he was good at the sport, it did not drive him like music did. But he didn't learn that fact on his own, it was his teacher that led him to the conclusion.Upon walking into his first music class, Lena McLin served as a mentor to R. Kelly. Forcing him to be put into uncomfortable situations, such as singing in front of his class within minutes of the first day of school, McLin was able to push him in just the right ways.In an interview with Sun Times, Kelly says, "On the first day I met her, Ms. McLin told me, 'You're going to be one of the greatest singers, songwriters and performers of all time. She taught me opera, classical music, jazz, gospel. She said, 'You are music. You're not in any one category. Anything you attempt, you'll be able to tap into the spirit of it, and that's the gift you have.' She made me."
Up until the high school talent show, R. Kelly knew that he liked music, but had no idea the influence it would have on his life.Still with the dreams of basketball stardom, Kelly hesitated to enter the talent show, but with the motivation from his teacher, he decided to try it out.It was in this moment that R. Kelly decided music was his life. With students cheering at the conclusion of his performance, he knew, one day, he would make it. He would be a world star hip hop star. And it was all because his teacher believed in him. Now, years later, his beloved high school music coach and mentor found herself struggling to make ends meet. With her pension not able to cover the costs of the apartment she currently lived in, Lena McLin believed she would lose the home she had been struggling to keep for the past 36 years.
Upon finding out the news of her struggle, R. Kelly immediately stepped into help. Creating a GoFundMe page in which people could donate money, Kelly saved not only her home, but her livelihood.
