The American funnyman passed away at the age of 90, according to his publicist Paul Schrifin.
The comic was known for mocking his audiences of all ages and popularity – famously including singer Frank Sinatra.
Sarcastically labeled "Mr Warmth," the star would use takedown comedy to its full advantage, with his career skyrocketing after insulting hot-tempered Sinatra at a gig – and making him roar with laughter.
At the time, he said: "Make yourself comfortable, Frank — hit somebody," as the notoriously moody singer laughed hysterically.
Don then added: "Frank, believe me, I'm telling you this as a friend: Your voice is gone."
It was this that was one of the comedian’s biggest boosters, shooting him up to stardom.
Speaking about his in-your-face insulting humour, Don said to the New York Daily News in 1996: "If I were to insult people and mean it, that wouldn't be funny.
"There's a difference between an actual insult and a friendly jab. So I don't think I'm offensive onstage.
"I like to think I'm like the guy who goes to the office Christmas party Friday night, insults some people but still has his job Monday morning."
Don was also a best-selling author, and is survived by his wife of 52 years, Barbara, his daughter and two grandchildren.
Fans were quick to share their condolences online for the comedian, with one writing: "#DonRickles was so damn funny. Another legend gone."
"RIP Don Rickles, who would and could insult anyone. Equal opportunity insulter, but always funny."
